“I am all-in on building Alberta’s future with Rachel Notley and the Alberta NDP.”Marilyn North Peigan
Marilyn is a mother, a Canadian Forces veteran, and a prominent voice for inclusion, reconciliation and representation. She aspires to be the first Blackfoot woman to win a seat in the Alberta Legislature.
Marilyn has the policy and community experience needed to secure Calgary-Klein for the Alberta NDP in the 2023 provincial election. Her work in non-profit grassroots organizations gives Marilyn insight and compassion for the issues ordinary Albertans are struggling with.
During her time with the Canadian Armed Forces, Marilyn was trained as a field medic with Toronto EMS and stationed with Edmonton Field Ambulance. She understands the importance of our emergency medical services and the need for them to function timely and efficiently. She is deeply concerned with the increasing EMS dispatch times and delays experienced by so many Albertans.
Marilyn is a member of the Blackfoot Confederacy, a Canadian Armed Forces Veteran, and holds an MA in Integrated Studies, with a focus on Work, Organization and Leadership.
She was a member of Calgary’s committee that produced the White Goose Flying Report, the local response to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission calls to action. As a member of the Calgary Police Commission, she is a champion for police reform in the areas of inclusion and anti-racism. A strong advocate of public health care, Marilyn was part of the team that made Covid vaccines more accessible to urban First Nations and Metis people.
She is also a dedicated volunteer in the local arts and music scene.
Focused on building Alberta’s Future for the next seven generations, Marilyn’s accomplishments reflect the values of the NDP – Public Health Care, Education, economic security, and inclusion for all Albertans:
Job Security For Albertans
Marilyn was a Collaborator on White Goose Flying Report, Calgary’s recommendations on the findings of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation commission. The White Goose Flying Report looks at the paths reconciliation can take to lift ALL Albertans out of poverty.
Equity and Inclusion of Albertans
Marilyn was part of the task force that took feedback from community members and to help shape and create the Anti-racism framework utilized by Calgary Police
Marilyn has long been an active proponent for the diversification of Calgary downtown and has actively worked to end Calgary’s 30% office vacancy rate. She is also a long time champion of Alberta’s performing arts scene and its need for further economic investment.
Recognition of Role of the Public Service
Marilyn used her position as a voice of reconciliation to help increase availability and uptake of COVID vaccines among urban indigenous populations. This included bringing vaccine clinics to members of Calgary’s Northeast communities.
Rejection of Race to the Bottom
Marilyn leads with integrity. She was one of the first Albertan academics to talk about Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women.
Marilyn plans to bring her strong sense of representation for all, and desire for justice, a diverse, green economy, and stronger schools and healthcare to Calgary Klein as a member of the Alberta NDP and Team Rachel Notley.
